Parent of CP Child

I understand that I will not receive any reward or compensation for any idea I chose to upload.:
Yes

Public Changing Tables in Rest Rooms that are large enough for our big/tall kids who can't walk or who are not Potty Trained. Should be in all Rest Areas along the Interstates. This will keep Parents from changing their child's Undergarents in the Car or prevent the child from having soiled underwear the entire Trip.

  1. In the UK there is a campaign for "Changing Places" toilets: http://www.changing-places.org/ it's a slow process but we are beginning to see progress with changing tables, hoisting systems etc appearing in more places. check out the website!

  2. There need to be more "family" style restrooms in public places so as not to raise looks when bringing older children in the opposite sex restrooms that still need assistance. I am the mother of two sons and always worry about the challenges and stares when they are older if only I am out with them in public and they need to use the restroom.

  3. I am only a nurse but how awful is it to have to make a client sit in skin-damaging wetness and discomfort because the only other option... in medical offices even, for pete's sake... is manually lifting a client onto a tile floor in a public restroom putting his or her entire body and my back at great risk, never mind the plethora of germs making this choice impossible!

  4. this is something that should of been fixed a long time ago,my son is 22 now and in 2008 when I moved from California to Missouri it was the hardest thing ,the only way was to have other kids go play and have to use sheets to cover windows and lay him down for changing so traveling now is impossible for this reason and outing cant be but a few hours ,camping is off limits also .

  5. While this is the preferable outcome we are constantly wanting the environment to change for us... it is costly and unlikely. Why do the wheelchair manufactures/designers not see this as an issue and design chairs that allow you to be changed in situ. Some are finally doing this... but the OTs in Australia and the service providers are not usually supportive. They seem to prefer laying a PWD on the floor of a public toilet facility without a hoist than a recline function or a "yet to be invented" convertible hammock option. We need the equipment producers to do better or we need to ask every OT to promise they will lay on a public toilet floor for 30 seconds prior to using the toilet every time... just to prove it is OK.

  6. I am the mother of a 10 year old disabled kid.The hardest thing for me is having to change. Because she is getting taller and taller every day and it is impossible to find a suitable place. We live in Antalya in the southern part of Turkey where you can enjoy the meditterean beach and the sea but because of this problem I can not take my daughter to the beach more often

  7. I agree but as a single father with 2 beautifu young daughters 3yr old thats toilet trained but has to go to every toilet whereever we go & my 4yr old who has CP, I use the change table (where fitted) to put my 4yr old on while i assist my 3yr old. My problem is not all perenting rooms are as uni sex as they should be, often they are part of the female toilets like a foyer to the females, & of course there is no where to put my 4yr old while i assist my 3yr old.. I must use a table or at least some form of bench seat to change my 4 yr old as i can not do it whilst trying to hold her upright plus I obviously have to have my other child with me in the cubical.. mY POINT is most parenting rooms are mum orintated, down the female toilet corridor, just off the ladies or in the ladies its self & the mens toilet is just out of the question.. Having said this i often use the diability toilet as it has the room but no chaange table or bench seat.. And yes even at 4yrs old i worry if them drop down table will support my girl for much longer, I also notice most dont have a max weight notice on these tables which would be of great assistance for the older kids.. Good luck with your idea..
